LEASH LAW (RICK)

HI! HOW ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU? Hey there, Karsten! I’m doing great. I’m in Orlando, Florida, right now. „DOGFACE“ IS OUT AND QUITE IMPRESSIVE. ARE YOU CONTENT WITH EVERYTHING? HOW ARE YOUR FEELINGS NOW AFTER WORK IS DONE? I feel great about everything. A lot of dreams came true for me with this release. I really couldn’t be happier. We worked hard and brought something new and fresh to the table. AS YOU ARE A QUITE NEW BAND IN THE METAL SCENE (ALTHOUGH YOU PLAY IN VARIOUS KNOWN ACTS) COULD YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS?! Sure! Wade Black on Vocals, Richard Christy on Drums, Emo Mowey on Guitar, Stephen Elder on bass and of course: Me… hehe MAYBE A DULL QUESTION: WHAT DOES THE BAND NAME MEAN? Well, here in Florida, there is such a thing as a Leash Law. It is there to keep pets on a leash for fear of running loose and attacking someone… With us, The Leash Law applies to the human race and there are way too many people out there running loose and attacking other people. It must be stopped.. YOUR LINE UP CONSISTS OF MUSICIANS FROM ROB ROCK, ICED EARTH ETC. – IS LEASH LAW OF TOP PRIORITY TO YOU? WHAT ARE YOU ABLE TO EXPRESS ARTISTICALLY IN LL WHAT YOU CANNOT DO IN YOUR OTHER BANDS? Most definitely! People don’t really attach themselves to Solo projects or whatever. Fans want a band they can enjoy and grow with. The opportunity for that is perfect for LL. For myself, I express my art through the songwriting and the guitar solos. For someone like Rob Rock, I am confined to play the songs he requires and don’t have much say in the writings. Even with with my solo album, I wrote all the music and had a great number of guests, but not so many bought the CD. It’s one big solo anyway..hehe AND HOW DID YOUR COLLABORATION WITH BLACK LOTUS START? ARE YOU CONTENT WITH THEIR PROMOTIONAL WORK? EVER BEEN IN GREECE PERSONALLY? After Wade and I created a 3 song demo we put up a website and email address and started shopping. A few weeks after the site was up we got an email from a mutual friend at BLR who said they wanted to talk to us about starting a deal. After the usual negotiations, we started recording immediately. I am very much content with BLR’s approach to promotion etc..They are a fantastic bunch of guys who are really working hard to make this band succeed. I was very fortunate to visit Greece earlier this year as Wade and I flew over for the mastering and a promotional concert. THE COVER IS VERY INTERESTING AND A LITTLE BIT STRANGE. WHICH IS THE MESSAGE? IS IT RELATED WITH THE TEXT CONCEPT AND DID YOU HAVE ANY INFLUENCE ON THE DESIGN? Well, the Doberman dog represents society and civilians. The men in front are the government. There is a power struggle between the two and Leash Law is sending a message to all freedom loving people that there is more to life and we have to stop these politicians and government making decisions for us, without our consent. We initially had another visual concept in mind, but Seth, our designer, listened to what we wanted and created it from there. He did a fantastic job and I am very proud of it. WHICH LYRICAL CONCEPT STANDS BEHIND “DOGFACE”? The lyrics are based on mankind’s obsession with war. Since the beginning of time there has been struggles between countries, cities, feuds between families etc..We acknowledge that and want to show how idiotic war and fighting can be. We are lucky to live in a society where we have the choice to do just abut anyhting we want, but as you know it wasn’t like that in the past and history always repeats itself. ARE DOGS SOME KIND OF FETISH TO YOU? DO YOU OWN ONE AS A MASCOT? No… No fetish or anything. Emo is the only band member with a dog. I’ve got 2 cats… hehe… But, personally, I love Doberman pinscher’s and I wanted the mascot to be that type of dog. Right now, I live in an apartment, so I don’t have room for a big dog like that… maybe one day… COULD YOU TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE PRODUCTION PROCESS? DOES THE SOUND FIT YOUR EXPECTATIONS? I BELIEVE MASTERING WAS DONE IN ATHENS? WHY WAS THAT SO? At first, Wade and I wrote about 5 songs together and I immediately started working with Richard to get the songs going. Once Emo joined the band, we started working on the final songs along with Richard. Many nights and hours in a row to get the songs right and then we went in the studio and started tracking drums. I believe the sound and production is great. We had to rush a bit due to deadlines, but if I could go back, I would spend a little more time on the mix. The mastering was doen in Athens, so we could have a Euro listening session with the media and play a semi-acoustic club show. YOU USED A SPECIAL DEVICE CALLED „SSL 4000 MIXING BOARD“ – WHAT IS SO IMPRESSIVE ABOUT IT? AND HOW COULD YOU AFFORD IT? :-) Yes. It is made by Solid State logic which is the foremost creator of consoles. Virtually every big record from the old days was recorded on something very similiar. Anything from Morrisound studios uses a console similiar to this one. However, the console we used was originally owned by Grammy and Academy award winning producer Giorgio Moroder. He produced sountracks for big movies like Top Gun and Scarface. The other thing is that we were the first Metal band to ever use it and we will use it again for sure! Thankfully, the studio guys where we recorded are really good friends of mine and they gave us some excellent rates, so we would be able to afford it. “STEALING GRACE” IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE TRACKS AS THERE IS VERY GOOD GUITAR WORK BY RICK. ANY COMMENTS ON THAT TRACK? Awesome! Thanks! I really appreciate that! It’s one of my faves, too. It has everything you could want in a Metal song. The music was about a year and a half old when I first presented it to Wade. I kept working and working trying to make it better and it looks like the hard work paid off. REGARDING THE TRACKS ON YOUR DEBUT IT SEEMS AS IF YOU SPEND MUCH TIME WORKING ON THE GUITAR PARTS. ARE YOU SOMEHOW PERFECTIONISTS? Most definitely! We made sure to take our time when needed on stuff like that. The guitars needed to be tight with everything and also getting the right sound was very important. Emo uses a 7-string and I use 6-string. So, a lot fo work went into matching the 2 sounds correctly. With my solos, I practiced them so much before going into the studio that I was nailing them left and right. There were a few spots that had me working really hard. I have about 2 hours of me recording solos… fun stuff to watch.. WILL YOU DO A VIDEO FOR ONE SPECIAL TRACK? We are working on something right now. I know of some videographers and we are working to get them to Florida and shoot a couple videos. We are hoping to release a DVD of sorts at some point soon. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CURRENT POWER METAL SCENE? ANY INTERESTING NEW INFLUENCES OR UNDERGROUND BANDS WHICH HAVE TO BE DISCOVERED? It seems as if the scene is becoming a churning vortex. 50-70 albums are coming every week and only a few of those bands stick around. You get about 3 months and you’re done if you don’t tour. A lot of saturation in the scene as well. Too many bands are playing certain chord progressions over and over and making it too obvious. I dont know of too many new bands..I like Dragonforce these days.. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN POWER METAL? Very much so… Euro Metal is very melodic and somewhat technical. US Metal is a series of chunky riffs with lower unmelodic voices. Each have their pro’s and con’s. I prefer Euro Metal anyday… AND HOW DO YOU LIKE THE NEW RELEASES OF ICED EARTH AND JUDAS PRIEST? Other than Richard and Tim, I didn’t like Iced Earth too much. I never really liked IE except for the „Night of the Stormrider” album. I haven’t heard the Judas Priest yet. I know Roy Z. very well and he is not giving samples or letting anyone hear anything. I dont blame him. But, I know that he is a great producer and will definetly help JP come back stronger than ever! DO YOU ALSO LIKE DEATH OR NU METAL FOR PERSONAL HEARING? Sometimes… I don’t listen to too much to stuff besides my own music and some very selected CDs. If anything, I listen to bands like JP or Maiden, Primal Fear, Yngwie, Rainbow… the good old stuff!! WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE BUSH/ KERRY FIGHT. WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE? IS POLITICS VERY IMPORTANT FOR YOUR LIFE? I try not to think about it too much. But, it looks as if Bush will be president again. That’s not such a bad thing, but the Republicans are much stiffer than Democrats. Two things I dont talk about much are politics and religion. I play guitar. Thats most important to me… WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER INTERESTS BESIDES MUSIC? I love Formula 1 and all other motorsports. A huge Michael Schumacher fan!! I also like to play a lot of video games, especially F1 and First person shooters. I also like to wacth NFL (Oakland raiders) and NBA (L.A. lakers).. WHEN WILL WE SEE YOU LIVE IN GERMANY AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT? Hopefully very soon. We are working on something for later this year. You can expect to see a pure metal show with all the trimmings. We are very excited to play anywhere and will put 110% into it. Oh yeah and it will be LOUD!!! WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE SEMI-UNPLUGGED LIVE GIG YOU DID? I THINK THIS WAS VERY SPECIAL EVEN FOR PROFS YOU ARE. We had talked about it for several months before doing it, but weren’t sure exactly what we should do since it was only Wade and myself doing the show. Before leaving to go, we had all the songs put onto CD backing tracks without my guitars and Wades vocals. We ended playing 4 or 5 songs with the CD and brought out an acoustic for some crazy stuff no one was expecting. First we did a full acoustic version of „Beyond the realms of death” by JP, then finished off with a medley of Maiden songs including “Hallowed be thy name”, “Revelations” and ”Children of the damned”. It was very special and a lot of fun. We gained a lot of respect playing those songs the way we did. IF YOU COULD CHOOSE WHICH OTHER ACT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SUPPORT? Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Nevermore… anyone that can get us in front of 500-1000 a show is great for me. ANY FAMOUS LAST WORDS? Sure, I want to thank you for this fantastic interview and all the support for Leash Law. Get out there and pick up “Dogface” as soon as you can and hopefully we will see you all very soon!! Metal Forever! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR TIME AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR STRONG EFFORT.
