HI! HOW ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU? Hello and trashing regards from Kuopio, from our cold home town. I‘m at home right now, doing these interviews and updating our website. HELLO GUYS! „DEADMEAT DISCIPLES“ IS OUT AND VERY IMPRESSIVE. ARE YOU CONTENT WITH EVERYTHING? HOW ARE YOUR FEELINGS NOW AFTER WORK IS DONE? I‘m glad to hear that you like our album. We‘re all quite pleased for everything on the album, Of course you can always do better and next time we‘ll kick ass even more. But realizing the fact that this is our first album, I think we did good. After the recordings there was a month or so when I couldn‘t listen it at all. But now after some time has passed it still sounds great. Actually the album was released in October in Finland and we‘ve had great reviews here already. So from that point of view it feels good and there‘s been lots of interest towards us from Europe also. So it looks good! AS YOU ARE A QUITE UNKNOWN (YET) BAND IN THE METAL SCENE COULD YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS?! IS ANYONE OF YOU INVOLVED IN OTHER BANDS/ PROJECTS? Here‘s our line-up: Me – guitar, Corpse – guitar, Kassara – drums, Kuolio – bass and Rotten – vocals. This has been the line-up after the demo Poltergeist 2002. The band started under the name of Winterwolf in 1997 with more deathmetal kind of a touch. After a lot s of hard work we did the Poltergeist demo and with that we got the recording deal with Dynamic Arts Records. For more detailed history you can check it out at Actually all of us has other bands, and they‘re not projects but real bands. First of all me, Corpse and Kassara are members of a blackmetal band called Trollheim‘s Grott. Actually, Kassara founded that band with his brother many years ago. They‘ve released two full lenght albums already, Bizarre Troll Technology and Bloodsoaked and Ill-fated through finnish label Woodcut Records. Then Corpse sings in a deathmetal band called De Lirium‘s Order and they‘re coming up with their debut album Victim No. 52 at the end of March. Also released by Woodcut Records. Kuolio has a melodic blackmetal band called Shade Empire and their debut album Sinthetic should be out any time now through Avantgarde Music. Last but not least Rotten also sings in a deathrock band called Sideshow Zombies. All of this here in Kuopio! You should check all these band‘s out! AND HOW DID YOUR COLLABORATION WITH DYNAMIC ARTS RECORDS START? ARE YOU CONTENT WITH THEIR PROMOTIONAL WORK? After the demo Poltergeist in 2002, we sent it all around to the labels and zines and so on. Dynamic Arts Records wanted to sign us and we accepted it. For it is a finnish label, it‘s easy to keep in touch with them and meet face to face. It‘s been a great advantage, we‘ve seen it already. It‘s much more easier to make plans and decide things face to face. And both of the bosses are really stand up guys so everythings works well. They‘re not veey big label but they‘ve done their job really well. Many bigger label fucks things up but Dynamic Arts has done great job all the time so far. We‘re really pleased with them. THE COVER IS VERY INTERESTING AND A LITTLE BIT MORBID. WHAT IS THE MESSAGE BEHIND IT? IS IT RELATED TO THE LYRICAL CONCEPT AND DID YOU HAVE ANY INFLUENCE ON THE DESIGN? With the cover and the booklet we wanted to make it old school. First of all we wanted it to be handpainted, no photoshop shit at all. We found this guy called Jani Mikkonen and he did great job! We just made plans and he made them happen. On the booklet behind lyrics there‘s always paintings that match to the lyrical concept. So they‘re very related to the lyrical concept of the album. We just wanted that old school feeling that you get when you look all the old Lp- covers like King Diamond‘s Abigail, Iron Maiden‘s Killers or Death‘s Scream Bloody Gore. WHICH LYRICAL CONCEPT STANDS BEHIND “DEADMEAT DISCIPLES”? (WHAT DOES THE TERM “DEADMEAT DISCIPLES” MEAN ANYWAY?) Deatmeat Disciples tells a story of a damned cult of cannibals who perform their sick rituals on the crypts below the ground. It‘s very old school lyrically. As they eat the flesh, the blood from the corpses raises the dead. Deatmeat Disciples comes from that basically, the dead and death, meat and flesh they eat and the disciples are the cult. COULD YOU TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE PRODUCTION PROCESS? DOES THE SOUND FIT YOUR EXPECTATIONS? IN CONTRAST TO OTHER BANDS YOU LAY SIGNIFICANT IMPORTANCE ON TRYING TO GIVE EACH SONG A SPECIAL ATMOSPHERE – DRUMS ARE VERY MUCH UPFRONT AT FIRST, LATER LATER ON GUITARS AND VOCALS. AM I RIGHT? It took about 30 days to record the album. Kassara did the drum tracks in just six hours which was pretty insane. First of all we didn‘t want to do an album that somebody has already done. Soundwise i mean. Of course we had some reference albums but we did our own thing. Our producer/engineer S.Jämsén did great job. Overall it‘s pretty nasty and mean sounding album. It‘s quite raw, there‘s not much effects or any that kind of shit. Something could have been made better but we‘re pleased with it for sure. Next time I think we‘re gonna bring the guitars more upfront. But you‘re right about the fact that we wanted to fuck around with the athmospheres in each song. “RABID VULTURES” IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE TRACKS AS IT IS VERY DISTURBING… ANY COMMENTS ON THAT TRACK? We‘ll that‘s a kick ass song for sure. Lyrically really old school. It‘s has a ripping sound on it, we really like that one! Exspecially live it really kicks ass. AND WHICH SHORT TERM WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO AN UNKNOWING PERSON? Bobby Undertaker – We call it deathrash so it‘s deathmetal and thrashmetal combined. It‘s fast, it‘s heavy and it‘s aggressive. But you can call it whatever you want it, it‘s metal all the same! WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CURRENT FINNISH DEATH/ THRASH METAL SCENE? TOO MANY BANDS? TOO MANY COPYCATS? ANY INTERESTING NEW INFLUENCES OR UNDERGROUND BANDS WHICH HAVE TO BE DISCOVERED? I must say that the past year has spawned many new bands playing death or thrash metal. It‘s a good thing of course. The good thing here is that nobody is trying to rip others of, everybody does their own thing. The scene in metal is very strong in Finland overall. But the thrash or death metal is not the kind of music that hits the charts in Finland. It not so mainstream that it could give really good success here. Thats why we‘re reaching out for Europe too. There‘s a lot more talent and good bands here than in the past. I think the band I mentioned before, De Lirium‘s Order will kick ass big time as their debut comes out this month. You should check it out! AND WHAT ABOUT BUSH/ TERRORISM AND THE GLOBAL POLITICAL SITUATION? ARE YOU INTERESTED AT ALL OR IS THE PRICING OF ALCOHOLICS MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU? 🙂 Actually the taxes of hard alcohol just dropped here in Finland so the booze is now more cheeper and of course that‘s more closer to our hearts than the fucking politics. But of course the terrorism and all that shit considers us all. Exspecially when maniacs and warmongers such as Bush are in charge behind the red buttons of doom. Usually I don‘t give a fuck about politics but the current situation in the world is so fucked up that you can‘t help yourself watching the news and keep yourself informed. YOU OBVIOUSLY LIKE HORROR MOVIES. COULD YOU TELL ME YOUR FAVOURITE TITLES? Horror is one of our biggest source of inspiration. The classics like Hellraiser (from which our bands name came from by the way), Evil Dead and The Exorcist are our favourites. From the newer ones, The Ring and 28 Days Later were great. And The House of 1000 Corpses was really cool, too! WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS BESIDES MUSIC? There‘s not much time for anything else exept the music and our girlfriends and boozing. That‘s the holy trinity of our lives. The music, our women and booze. Me and Corpse lift some weights. Kassatra plays in his universitys softball team and Kuolio is a goalie in a local rocker‘s icehockey team. Rotten is just rotten all the time. WHEN WILL WE SEE YOU LIVE IN GERMANY AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT? I hope very soon. There‘s been plans about next summer and I‘ll hope we can confirm it soon. Deathchain live is a blast, a fucking fist on your face! Nothing but headbanging, thrashing and loud fucking music! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR TIME AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR STRONG EFFORT.
