HI! HOW ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU? WHO ARE YOU? Hello! Great, United States, Chris „Life Cried“. YOUR DEBUT ALBUM IS OUT NOW AND QUITE IMPRESSIVE. ARE YOU CONTENT WITH EVERYTHING? HOW ARE YOUR FEELINGS NOW AFTER WORK IS DONE? Things have been going great since the albums release, I am glad everything is finally finished and available to get a hold of, we look forward now to playing more live shows. AS YOU ARE A QUITE NEW PROJECT IN THE ELECTRONIC SCENE COULD YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS?! WHY DID YOU CHOSE THE NAME „LIFE CRIED“? AND HAVE YOU BEEN ACTIVE IN OTHER BANDS OR PROJECTS? I started LIFE CRIED as a side project from other bands I was working with at the time, later I decided to make this my main project because the music I was writing was a lot darker and fit me better, I chose the name „Life Cried“ because I didn’t want to have a typical/ cliche industrial band name. „DRAWN & QUARTERED“ IS A STRONG AND QUITE BRUTAL TITLE. HOW DO YOU WANT THIS TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH YOUR MUSIC? IS IT TO INCREASE OR DECREASE AGGRESSION? The sound of D&Q is harsh, brutal and in your face, I figured that the title had to be just as strong. THE COVER IS SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE. FIRST THING THAT CAME INTO MY MIND WAS THE „SAW MOVIE“-SERIES. IS THERE ANY CONNECTION REGARDING YOUR ARTWORK? Dave from „Hive Records“ actually did the artwork for this album, he knew the style/ image I was going for and came up with a great concept for the art, I think it fits perfectly with the music, I am a big fan of the „Saw“ movie series so I don’t mind the similar look to the art. AND HOW DID YOUR COLLABORATION WITH NOITEKK START? YOU OBVIOUSLY PLAYED WITH GRENDEL, SO WHO MADE UP THE CONTACT? I had given NoiTekk a rough demo when they were in the states for the ASLAN FACTION/ GRENDEL show, Marco from the label kept in touch after that and later asked for a track to put on the “United Vol. 1” compilation, later after that we made an agreement to sign with him, so far things have been great. YOUR MUSIC CAN BE DESCRIBED AS AGGRESSIVE BUT ACCESSIBLE DARK ELECTRO I BELIEVE. WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES AND WHICH PROJECTS DO YOU LIKE PERSONALLY? ANYTHING OUTSIDE THE ELECTRONIC GENRE? I listen to many different styles of music and have many influences, the most noticable would be WUMPSCUT, AMGOD, SUICIDE COMMANDO, HOCICO, SKINNY PUPPY, CRADLE OF FILTH, YELWORC, DIOXYDE, FEINDFLUG… COULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF SONGWRITING, PLEASE. FIRST LYRICS, FIRST MUSIC? WHICH DEVICES DO YOU USE? I usually write the music first, the lyrics will always change based on the sound of the music behind them. DID YOU WRITE THE SONGS OVER A LONGER PERIOD WHICH IS OFTEN A FACT WITH DEBUTS OR IS IT THE CONDENSED WORK OF THE LAST FEW MONTHS? I wrote and recorded the D&Q album between 2003 and 2005, the writing process usually doesn’t take that long, at the time we were doing alot of shows and basically producing demos just to give out to labels and dj’s. WHICH LYRICAL CONCEPT STANDS BEHIND “DRAWN & QUARTERED”? IS THERE SOME KIND OF PHILOSOPHY THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE ALBUM? There are many different themes on this album, almost every song has a different concept, I wouldn’t say there is one specific theme I was going for. COULD YOU TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE PRODUCTION PROCESS? DO YOU PRODUCE EVERYTHING AT HOME OR IN AN „OUTSIDE“ STUDIO? Most of the writing/ recording process took place at my house, a lot of the vocals were recorded at a friend’s house (James Z. from Noise Filter Productions) who has a home studio setup like I do. I ESPECIALLY LIKE YOUR STRONG DRUM BEATS, ANY SECRETS BEHIND IT? I can’t think of any specific tips off the top of my head, I don’t use the typical 4/4 beat for every song and I think that makes a difference, I like producing more aggressive beats. “LIVING HELL” IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE TRACKS AS IT TRIES TO ESCAPE CONVENTIONAL GENRE TRAPS. ANY COMMENTS ON THAT TRACK? I agree „Living Hell“ isn’t your typical EBM song and I am proud of that, I have actually received more feedback about that song than I thought I would, people seem to really dig it. ALREADY WRITTEN NEW SONGS AND IF SO, WILL THERE BE A (SLIGHT) CHANGE OF STYLE IN FUTURE? I already have a handful of songs that I am working on for the next album, I am experimenting a bit more but the tracks are just as dark and brutal. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CURRENT ELECTRONIC SCENE IN THE STATES? TOO MANY BANDS? TOO MANY COPYCATS? ANY INTERESTING NEW INFLUENCES OR UNDERGROUND BANDS WHICH HAVE TO BE DISCOVERED? I am glad to see that dark EBM is getting more credit, I have always wrote dark/ aggressive music and people seem to appreciate it a lot more now. AND WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON BUSH AND THE GLOBAL POLITICAL SITUATION IN YOUR HOME COUNTRY? FOR EXAMPLE, MINISTRY ARE AT THEIR BEST WHEN HATING THEIR GOVERNMENT. DOES HATE (OF ANY KIND) INCREASE CREATIVITY? DO YOU FEEL FREE AND SAVE IN THE USA IN THESE TIMES? I don’t pay enough attention to politics to have a solid opinion (or one worth mentioning), though hate does have influence on the music I write and I would agree that it increases creativity. JOS OF GRENDEL HAD STRONG PROBLEMS WHEN TRYING TO CROSS THE BORDER BETWEEN CANADA AND THE STATES. HE HAD TO CANCEL HIS GIGS I BELIEVE. DID YOU ALREADY TALK TO HIM AND GIVE A DONATION? 🙂 Jos is a good friend of ours and I was actually in Canada when that happend, we ended up having to sneak his equipment out of the country for him, since we are form the states it was a little easier for us to get gear across (but not much!), it’s a shame that he had to cancel the tour. I ASSUME YOU WOULD LIKE „DARK“ MOVIES. COULD YOU TELL ME YOUR FAVOURITE TITLES? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE NEW WAVE OF AMERICAN HORROR MOVIES SUCH AS „HOSTEL“, „HILLS HAVE EYES“ OR „THE DEVIL’S REJECTS“? I am a huge fan of the horror genera, some favorites are The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead, High Tension, Saw, The Omen, Hellraiser… the list goes on, I love those movies you mentioned as well, Alexandre Aja, Rob Zombie and Eli Roth are all great directors. WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER INTERESTS BESIDES MUSIC? Uhh… Music! WHEN WILL WE SEE YOU LIVE IN GERMANY AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT? DO YOU HAVE LIVE MUSICIANS OR SPECIAL VISUALS? We can’t wait to play Germany, hopefully we will make it over later this year, you can expect a brutal show, our live members include Len B. and John R. on live keyoards and Chris C. on drum pads. ANY LAST WORDS TO OUR READERS? Buy the album! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR TIME AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR STRONG EFFORT.
